Malawi/Lilongwe

27 Stunden Busreise stand mir bevor.

War also einwenig besorgt.
Aber "everything is arranged for you" wurde mir mehrfach garantiert. No worries! "Malawi Border!" sagte man mir.
Just Happy to be in Malawi!

Raphi

TANZANIA

Jambo!

Raphi

<div style='clear:both; It's an office job that I got though a friend of my brother Stephan. So I'm back in everyday life meaning that I sit in the office in front of two large screens and feed the computer with data. Sounds exciting I know, but in fact it's OK for the time being. I'll probably do this job only until the end of February and then start something different.
Besides my office activity I work during the nights, taking pictures from events and clubs. It's fun! Because I work 27 hours a day I realize more and more what the essential things in a workers life are and how I spend my "free" time. I miss sleeping... I just remember from the past that sleeping was a relaxing experience. I think I should try it some time again.

My dear friends party too much. I have to get myself a calender not to forget a celebration ;-) especially now that the semester is ending Vienna is not safe anymore.

Yesterday I got surprised a lot when I saw a "Cafe - Coffee Day" (the Indian cafe chain) in Vienna. I walked into the big premises and immediately bunched into and Austrian-Indian friend from McLeod Ganj (Himachal Pradesh, India). By the way Austria is the only country besides Pakistan where Coffee Day has a Cafe outside India (and they are about to open their 3rd store soon!!).
In the evening on a party at the 'University for Applied Arts' I met another Austrian whom I know from India (Ladakh). And I had a happy reunion with Nina, Nina & Verena with whom I spend a week in Pushkar.

Warm greets to all my beloved ones!!!
Raphi

Austria

One month passed by since I retured to Austria.
Most of my time I spent with meeting my friends and attending every party.

Now I started working in an office for the next month.
My future plans are still quite unsure, but I'm in a process of finding my path... :-)

I miss all the people I met in amazing India and the easy, lovely athmosphere that surrounded me all the time.

Love from Vienna, Raphael

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_OCxhyY77BjA/R-QEQVbIrQI/AAAAAAAACsA/6vHNnRKUuHs/s400/IMG_0218.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5180270150058290434" />

Happy New Year

My dear friends, I wish you all a wonderfull new year 2008 full of love and happiness!!!

An guadn Rutsch meine liabn Freund!!!! type='text'>Parvati with Stephan & Miriam

Namaste!

After I got the news that my friends Stephan & Miriam (whom I know from Kfar Rafael, Israel) are arriving to India, I left Kee Gompa and startet to head towards Kinnour Valley. On my way I stoped to see Tobo Gompa and the beautiful village of Nako, where I refreshed my cold again. Feeling sick I realxed in Kalpa and arranged to meet S & M in Chitkul. There I waited two days in freezing rainy weather. When they arrived and the clouds vanished, a beautiful landscape full of snow appeared in front of us.

In the meanwhile we made our way to Parvati Valley where we'll stay for a week or so to continue then to Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj.

Love, peace & The last two weeks I spent in the oldest and biggest monestary in Spitti, Kee Gompa. Here a have a very peacefull and quiet environment, just the right place to recover. I eat with the monks, take part in the pujas (worshipping), read a lot and meditate.

In a few days time I want to head to Kinnaur Valley and afterwards to Parvati.<br (english)

For the German version go to the previous Post!

Julley from Ladakh!

After being more then 6 weeks in the beautiful Indian Himalayas it's time for me to keep on moving. The capital of Ladakh, Leh on 3600m was the gateway for all my journeys and adventures. The place overwhelmed me with its breathtaking mountain ranges and desert like moon-landscapes. The Buddhist culture and mentality reminded me a lot of Nepal whereas the landscape should be very similar to Tibet.
After I acclimatized myself for a week I met 3 Scots who wanted to go to the famous Pangong Lake (one of the biggest Lakes is Asia). The idea to go the 160km there by motorbike was great, I was just a little scared because I never sat on a motorized two-wheeler (not even a scooter). But the fact that none of them have ridden a bike before gave me great confidence. So we rented a bike (the guy at the rental shop advised us though to take a jeep, because there would be nobody to help us on the way in case of an incident) for a few hours and practiced and on the next day we started our trip with lots of incidents. Two of my mates have never even ridden a car before, so they didn't really know how to handle a gear and the traffic. As we arrived at the Pass at 5300m there were only two of us left, the others didn't manage on the unpaved road where we had to cross rivers etc. and their bikes were in bad mood as well ;-( The road trip was the most wonderful and breathtaking I've ever done. The desert like landscape was changing all the time in terms of color and shape and the different weather conditions helped to create fascinating beauty.

The lake itself, located on 4500m altitude, is going far into Tibet and is absolutely breathtaking. Fortunately I saw sunset and sunrise in freezing temperatures - the nature in its absolute perfection. Only a few local people and the Indian army are living in these rough conditions.

My next trip took me over "Khardung La", the highest motorable pass in the world on 5600m. Together with 5 Israelis I was going to Nubra Valley where we had a wonderful 4 days climbing sand dunes and enjoying the beautiful environment. We stayed with a lovely Ladakhi family, cooked together and enjoyed their hospitality.

Back in Leh one of the Israelis invited me to come with him to a 5 days trek. Although at first I felt like having enough of trekking after Nepal, the thirst for a new adventure overcame me and I happily took his invitation. With all our equipment (tents, food, stove, etc.) on us Roie, Annette (from Germany) and me went to the Hidden Valleys of Ladakh. Climbing three mountain passes of 3600m 4950m and 4820m we had the most amazing views and where surrounded by several ranges and smelled the air on top of the world.

One wonderful evening in a Restaurant back in Leh I met a guy who told me about a Vipassana (Buddhist meditation) course starting on the next day (thx Ben!!). Although I didn't apply for the course I just went on a four hours ride to "Vipassana Valley" and hoped for good luck. I always had the idea of participating in such a course and why not in the most amazing environment of the mountains of Ladakh? I didn't know how intense it's going to be, but I was jumping strait into the cold water. A few facts: Talking, eye contact or any kind of communication are not allowed; the day starts at 4 AM with two hours of meditation and consists of almost 12 hours meditation all together, until 9 PM; there is only Breakfast and Lunch (at 11AM) - nevertheless I was never really hungry. After sitting the whole day my body was hurting so much that I had really hard times to concentrate on my respiration or body sensations. And not talking for 10 days made me thinking so much, I almost had the impression that I had to discuss all my thoughts with myself - that made my concentration problem not easier at all. But after 5, 6 days the meditation helped me a lot to stay euonymus and not feel my pain so much anymore. This technique of meditation was practiced my Gautama and enlightened him to become a Buddha. His whole life he dedicated to "Dhamma" and taught other people this technique to be happier and come out of their misery.
There is so much Love, Peace and Happiness in this teaching that still after the really tough course I still think about applying it into my daily life (which means to meditate twice a day for an hour).

Now I'm hanging around in Leh's Cafes and Restaurants and meeting fellow mates from the course. In a few days it's time for me to move on and get to know more of this incredible India.

With lots of Love,
Raphael

BE HAPPY!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://raphaelontour.blogspot.com/2007/08/julley-from-ladakh-english.html' title='Julley from Ladakh! (deutsch)

By the Way...

Lets keep in touch.
In Liebe, Raphael

Be Happy!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://raphaelontour.blogspot.com/2007/08/julley-from-ladakh-deutsch.html' title='Julley from Ladakh! Next to me sat a very nice guy who also went to Delhi to visit his sister. His mother cooked him some delicious food that he shared with me. When the bus stopped for dinner he shared also his soup with me and payed for the bus we had to take to the border in the morning. Unfortunately we didn't meet again in Gorakpur as we planned. I was amazed about his generosity and felt shame that I couldn't return the favour. After crossing the border I took a Jeep to Gorkhpur from where my train left in the afternoon. Killing the next 6 hours wasn't a big problem. I spent only 2 hours on the post office trying to send a big parcel back home.
I was a bit excited about my train ride, for the first time I didn't book in advance, so I was hoping to get a seat in the sleeper carriage by paying of the conductor. Unfortunately the train was so full that not even this worked out. A very nice guy, who shared his food with me, offered me however also to share his bed with me. I was amazed by his offer! Although I didn't sleep very well I was very glad about having a bed at all.

In a few hours my netxt train will leave for another overnight journey to Kashmir. Looking forward to the third consecutive night in public transportation ;-)!!

Trekking in the Himalaya

Annapurna Trek

Hightlights of Nepal

Now that I'm leaving this beautiful country already, it's time to summarize my favorite highlights:

- hanging around in Kathmandu's Restaurants and Bars and meeting people there

- trekking in the Himalaya (and enjoying Nepal's mountain grass)

- Jazz Upstairs!!!! the best jazz bar I've been to

- the friendly and happy Nepalis

...... looking forward to come back!

Tonight I'm going back to India where I meet Florian whom I worked with together in B'lore. Nepal is not so crowded with tourists at the moment, but everybody I met told me about trekking (thank you Demian!!) and that it's in spite of seldom rain showers a wonderful experience. Finally I decided against the Buddhist monastery where I wanted to spend my time in deep meditation, and decided to go for the Annapurna Trek. I spend quite some time in Kathmandu buying everything I needed for surviving 10 days in the nature. From raincoat, shoes, sunglasses, a torch & a knife, iodine (water purifying tablets) to a sleeping bag.... everything was in my bag when I left. Although I only took the most essential things, I still had to carry around 17 kg which is quite a lot for a 10 days trek.
Arrived in Pokhara (the gateway to most of the famous treks) I shared the taxi with two French guys (Farid & Sebastien) who also came for the same trek. After a few minutes from my arrival I found trekking partners which I was very happy about.
Next day we started and very quickly I realized that I wasn't in such a good shape. But Seb and Farid where challenging me quite a lot. After the 3rd day which we spend 11 hours hiking steeply up and down I couldn't move anymore. On the same evening we met a funny group of guys, Kristen and her sister Haley from Canada and Matthew and Freddie from England. Suddenly I heard a sentence that inspired me for the rest of my trip "It's not about the destination, it's about the trip!" (Thanks Haley!!!) Next day the French guys left me a sprinted up to the top. I stayed with the other guys and took it really easy. On day 6 early morning we reached the Annapurna Base Camp and saw an incredible sunrise.
The higher we got up the mountain, the more difficult was it to breath. Up at the A.B.C. it was at times really difficult to catch my breath, and I was moving pretty slow. It was sometimes like a delirium, feeling dizzy and weak. Nevertheless we decided to stay for one day at the top, it is one of the most wonderful places of nature I've ever seen in my short life.

Thanks Seb, Farid for pushing me up the mountain!
Thanks Kristen, Haley, Matthew & Freddie for letting me join your group as a friend and having lots of fun together!!!!

Let's keep in touch!

Kathmandu Pics

Kathmandu #1

Kathmandu

Hey everybody from Kathmandu!

After half a year India, being in Nepal, Kathmandu is like a hole different world. This place seems to be more like Thailand then like India. People are not so deeply rooted in their tradition, more open and liberal. Night life here is fully developed and the streets are clean and more calm. Although this country is even poorer then it's big neighbor Nepali people seem to be more happy and joyful. I have to admit that Kathmandu itself is more expensive then any Indian city, but it offers also a lot more (for the traveler).
Looking forward to tonights Jam Session in the "Jazz Upstairs" Bar!!!!

I was actually sad to come here in the rainy season, where mountaineering is not really recommended and you also don't really have the amazing view on the mountains. Nevertheless, after talking to some Belgium guy I decided to do a 10 days trek to the Annapurna Base Camp.

In the last few days I updated my Blog with all kinds of pictures even dating back to April when I was going to Hampi and Goa. There I only spent a few hours before going by train to Varanasi.
Becuase I only have a few days left before my visa expires I didn't want to waste them in a big city like Delhi. Nevertheless I went to old Delhi to see India's biggest mosque, the Jama Masjid.

When I went back to the railway station in New Delhi I had troubles to find my train on the display panel. In the end I arrived one minute before the train was leaving. I found my name on the list outside the sleeping carriage and was lucky to relax. Because of the temperature of 46 centigrade I was suffering quite a big deal (friends of mine told me that they never saw somebody who sweats like me!!!). To cool down I was simply standing at the open door of the carriage but the hot air didn't have a good cooling effect. With me together there was a guy from Srinagar (Kashmir) standing there and having a nice chat. He told me about the weather in his native place and I was really looking forward to go there. It should me quite chilly and even still snowing over there. He was very proud of his country that is also called the "Switzerland of India". Sweaty I fall to a very deep. When I woke up the train was already entering Varanasi and in one minute I tried to realize whats going on, pack my things and get out of the train. Obviously I forgot something (my only trousers I brought to India), but it was only of emotional worth.

Varanasi - on the western banks of the sacred Ganges River in Uttar Pradesh - is one of the holiest cities in India. The city is even a little hotter than Delhi! Here I'm laying now in my room with diarrhea and sweating 24 hours a day. According to the weather forecast it should get even hotter. Na servas!!!
In my hotel I met a German guy whom I know from the train to Goa and who is traveling around the world. He even lives next door.
This city is amazing. Everywhere people take a bath in the holy river Mother Ganga (Ganges) it should be purifying the soul. But actually there are 1,5 mio. E.coli in 100 ml. of water and swimming water should have a desired value under 500. Most of the sewage of the city is ending up in the river and besides that often half burned human cadavers are being thrown there. "There's no better way to hedge your bets on that next incarnation than to die in Varanasi, where your body can be cast into the holy river for a watery burial.

The Ganges cleanses all sins and ensures a release from the Hindu cycle of rebirths: it's an instant passport to heaven. Many elderly and ill people come to Varanasi to die, and old Sadhus (men who have given up their worldly possessions for a life of absolute religious devotion) congregate along the river banks." (Source: http://www.lonelyplanet.com/theme/fatal_attractions/fatal_varanasi.htm)

I hope to recover soon and see more of this fascinating place.

May Lord Shiva bless you all!!

Chai, Chillum, Chapati - Chello Parvati

Delhi Pics

See a few pics from my 4 hours stay in the capital of India.

The mosque I've been is the biggest one in the country!

Delhi

Goodbye Bangalore

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_OCxhyY77BjA/Rl6SsKMcsNI/AAAAAAAAAKA/0LlKuqnI0X4/s320/Img_4415.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5070651517814223058" />
After spending five months in Bangalore it's time for me to get on moving. First of all I have to leave to country to renew my visa, which expires on the 10th june. For that reason I'm going to Nepal. Actually it's the worst time for a visit to Nepal because just now the monsoon season starts and Nepal which is famous for it's beautiful mountains will be flooded with rain and trekking in the mountains won't be possible, unfortunately. Still I decided to go there, also if only for a short period of time. Back in India I want to go to Ladakh in the state of Jammu and Kashmir in Northern India. This journey will take me on the highest mountain pass in the world (altitude: 5360 meters) which is only open for a few months in the summer, the rest of the year it's blocked by snow. Apart from that I want to do a three weeks Yoga course in Rishikesh and a Vipassana (buddistic meditation) course.
That are my plans so far.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_OCxhyY77BjA/Rl6an6McsOI/AAAAAAAAAKI/nZ5z723rFDE/s320/Img_4218.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5070660240892801250" />

When I'm looking back on my time here in Bangalore and the voluntary work I would describe it as a time full of struggle. This community is lacking a propper organisation structure and some more houseparents. The idea of a hierarchy free community is very difficult in a country like India where the class (or caste) system is still so present. Our housefather is mostly called Sir and some residents also start calling me like that. It's very hard when you always have only one opinion and decicions are not discussed and negotiated between more people. But we learned to live with this struggle and tried to ignore all these negativ sides. Still this is topic No.1 when the Co-Workers sit together in the off time, although we want to realx and thik of something else the the work all the time we always have to digest all the struggles we go through during the day.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_OCxhyY77BjA/Rl6fzqMcsRI/AAAAAAAAAKg/eWjkG-d37-8/s320/Img_4300.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5070665940314403090" />

For sure it was also an enjoyable time where I learnt a lot (especially how to deal with struggles :-)) and had moments of fun and joy. But I'm happy to move forward and explore more of this country and the hole region.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_OCxhyY77BjA/Rl6bkKMcsPI/AAAAAAAAAKQ/7W4Skl6FQ2s/s320/Img_4087.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5070661275979919602" />

It came somehow automatically that I update my blog now only in english, the language I mostly use at the moment. Nice also for all my non-german-speaking friends (hope they are also taking a look) to be up to date. Also I uploaded some pics from my holidays in Hampi and Goa and new pics from B'lore.
Sorry that I didn't write ealier. My day off (which is the only day I can go to the city) is mostly very stressfull and full with things I wanna do and organize. For example today I wanted to book my train from Delhi to Varanasi; I went to the reservation office where I had to wait in a Q for one hour; when I finally came to the counter the train I wanted to take was booked out and the guy asked me for my passport because there is always a limited tourist quota. Unfortunately for the first time I didn't have my passport with me and I couldn't find a way to get my passport number. In the end I had to book a different train.
Everything takes time here and is often very exhausting. So most of the time I don't feel like "wasting" my precious time in a internet cafe. But now that time has a totaly different meaning I promise to get you more updates about my experiences. Hope also to hear from all of you.

Love, Raphi

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_OCxhyY77BjA/Rl6daKMcsQI/AAAAAAAAAKY/VEUSujY2TGE/s320/Img_4401.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5070663303204483330" />

Holidays in GOA

Hello my dear blog-readers!

Finally I find some time to update my site. type='text'>Shalom haverim!

Finally I find time to write to my non German speaking friends out there. For those of you who didn't know, I'm staying in India since the 19th of December and presently working in "Friends of Camphill India" in Bangalore.
Right in the beginning I met with Philipp and Susi whom most of you know from Kfar Rafael. They were already touring India for a few months and now moved on to Thailand. We spent 3 Weeks together exploring the south Indian state Kerala. It was nice having companionship in the beginning of my time here. Very helpful also in terms of organization and integration in the Indian culture and chaos. In a few months Stephan and Miriam with whom I also worked together in Kfar Rafael are probably also coming to India as a part of their round the world journey. So we who got to know each other in Israel and still have a very close friendship now all meet in India again.
After spending a wonderful and relaxing time in Kerala (which I needed a lot after my exhausting job in Munich) I went to the place of my final destination here in Bangalore.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_OCxhyY77BjA/ReaoyqfX40I/AAAAAAAAAGo/ZMGrpU_wKDM/s320/IMG_2726.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5036898821613282114" />

"Friends of Camphill India" is a residential community for mentally handicapped adults (although there are also pretty young villagers). The community has two houses and is home for 45 people from whom 24 are villagers with special needs, along with me there are 10 co-wokers from abroad (mostly from Germany and Austria) and 3-4 permanent Indian co-workers and 2 kitchen staff. There is only one family living here, Francis from Holland who founded the Camphill together with her Indian husband Anantha; they have 3 children. In the daily work the house parents are more or less not present, that also explains the need of 5 meetings every weeks. One for the whole community, one for every house, one for the Indian co-workers and one for all the co-workers. Due to that fact there is a lack of guidance for new co-workers and everybody has to carry great responsibility.
But on the other side it's a good challenge for every one. Since I'm here I played already the main part in a parsifal drama the community did together with the people from the social therapy seminar which takes place twice a year here in the camphill. I'm also working on a movie about the community. Francis asked me to do one after she saw the one I did about the Kfar because she wants to use it for reasons of fundraising abroad.

On Monday I'm going to make the final decision if to stay here half a year or a full year. My tendency is really going towards half a year since I want to explore the rest of the country and maybe want to work in other places as well. At the moment I don't have clear plans, but in June I anyway have to go abroad to expand my visa. For that reason I will go to Nepal and maybe also work there on a organic farm and do some trekking in the Himalaya. Afterwards I maybe want to work in a place that's going to be a Camphill soon. It's located in Goa next to the Sea and two former Co-workers are just leaving today to live there and built up the place for the future. To visit the Auroville (near the Southeast Indian City of Chennai) Community would be also an opportunity for me. I will see where I will end up...

Right now I'm enjoying my day off in the city of Bangalore, one of the richest and biggest cities in India. Bangalore is the Silicon Valley of South-East Asia, it's per capita income is the highest for any Indian city. But that just makes the contrast between the poor end the rich, the modern and the simple-traditional even bigger and is on of the biggest challenges for the future.

ENDLICH: Bilder aus Indien

Camphill EIndrücke

Erste Eindruecke aus dem Camphill

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_OCxhyY77BjA/RcSO2gALxgI/AAAAAAAAAAM/nPpIq4rLJTk/s320/IMG_2044.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5027300151007102466" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_OCxhyY77BjA/RcSQJQALxiI/AAAAAAAAAAg/xBa7R2IZfcM/s320/IMG_2226.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5027301572641277474" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_OCxhyY77BjA/RcSQJAALxhI/AAAAAAAAAAY/ZY7nVURnxJA/s320/IMG_2081.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5027301568346310162" />

Weihnachtsgruss

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_OCxhyY77BjA/RcSSUwALxjI/AAAAAAAAAAw/VF37Za-RBUE/s320/IMG_1707.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5027303969233028658" />

Naechster Flug in 8 Stunden.... jetzt erst einmal Flughafen wechseln. No Problem.... Shuttle Buses for FREE! Mhhh? Was jetzt? Egal, Hauptsache eingecheckt.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_OCxhyY77BjA/RcSTMAALxmI/AAAAAAAAABI/8WDkkmUINhI/s320/IMG_1716.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5027304918420801122" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_OCxhyY77BjA/RcSSUwALxkI/AAAAAAAAAA4/P5kXixMKE-U/s320/IMG_1785.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5027303969233028674" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_OCxhyY77BjA/RcSSVAALxlI/AAAAAAAAABA/lQjUcq1sTAA/s320/IMG_1682.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5027303973527995986" />
